AI’s Cognitive Debt! Research has found that the more humans rely on AI tools, the more vulnerable they are to loss of cognitive capacity.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the world, and technological advances are making AI chat robots more intelligent and human, and their modes of interaction are becoming closer to human thinking. However, as tools such as ChatGPT evolve, to some extent human work efficiency has increased, but users are also becoming more dependent on AI in their daily lives and learning. According to recent studies, the more intelligent AI is, the more likely it is to erode human cognitive capacity.

MIT scientists noted that over-reliance on tools such as ChatGPT would lead to reduced cognitive capacity and the degradation of critical thinking. The current wave of artificial intelligence will not recede in the short term and these tools will increasingly affect daily life at a deeper level. It appears that human beings are becoming more and more accustomed to seeking help from AI tools when they encounter difficulties in all aspects of life. At a time when tools such as ChatGPT were displaying alarming levels of intelligence, a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology revealed the possible impact of reliance on ChatGPT on user cognitive capabilities.

The study divided the participants into three groups, using the ChatGPT, the search engine or simply not using tools to write the papers. Researchers assess the brain activity of participants in writing through electroencephalogram scanning and use the dual assessment of the AI system and manual evaluation to ensure the accuracy of the paper rating. The study found that the group relying on ChatGPT writing had the lowest level of neuroactivity, especially in areas such as cognitive participation and memory. These participants also have memory retention barriers that prevent them from recapitulating exactly what they have written.

Increased memory retention and brain activity for technically assisted participants, compared to ChatGPT users, allows for deeper cognitive activity. In the follow-up experiment, when the ChatGPT team was asked to complete the paper independently of AI, its achievements were clearly behind those of other groups. Experiments have demonstrated that the repeated reliance on AI tools such as ChatGPT will lead to what researchers call “cognitive debt” situations, gradually undermining critical thinking and even core learning competencies.

While this is a single study, it is indeed worth reflecting on whether over-reliance on tools such as ChatGPT is making us pay a greater price for convenience.
