The Open World RPG ” Red Desert ” , created by Korean developer Pearl Abyss, was officially launched on March 20, with a sales volume of over 5 million in less than a month, the fastest ever recorded in Korea ‘ s host game.

The Prime Minister of Korea, Kim Min-sik, has recently expressed great appreciation for Red Desert and Pearl Abyss in social media. He noted that Red Desert had been developed by the Pearl Abyss self-study engine and incorporated elements such as taekwondo and Korean cooking, opening a new chapter in the Korean content market. Kim Min-sik said: “This achievement is a remarkable demonstration of the ability of the Korean indigenous play industry to leapfrog across multiple platforms, including the mainframe. The Government will also take an active responsibility and provide strong support. We will work to create an environment conducive to the game becoming the backbone of the Korean content industry.”

The success of the Red Desert is a very positive signal for Korean developers known for their hand-swam and PC network friends. In recent years, Korean developers have made significant progress towards the mainframe platform through a single-acting adventure game. The PlayStation 5 game developed by Shift Up in 2024, Sword Star, and the Neowiz spirit game Pinocchio’s Lies in 2023, were successful. Last December, Chief Executive Officer Kim Heng Tae-in of Shift Up won presidential recognition for his contribution to the game industry at the ceremony of the Republic of Korea Content Award 2025. Perhaps Pearl Abyss could look forward to similar honours at the end of this year.
